CHAPTER FOUR
ARTISTS OF THE 90s
Rock continued to expand and mutate in the 1990s. Grunge, rap-rock, Britpop, riot grrl, industrial rock, post-hardcore—these were just a few of the genres and movements that rose to prominence over the course of the decade. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting groups of that exciting time.
Nirvana
Before Nirvana, alternative and indie rock flew largely beneath the radar. Groups like Sonic Youth and REM may have landed deals with major labels, but glam metal (aka “hair metal”) groups like Mötley Crüe and Poison dominated the radio, TV, and most any other mainstream outlet for rock music.
But when Nirvana released their second album, Nevermind (1991), everything changed. The record’s lead single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” played constantly on radio and MTV and became a hit in the US, the UK, and many other countries. Thanks to the runaway success of the song and Nevermind, music writers started dubbing Kurt Cobain the unofficial voice of the Generation X (he didn’t much like the title). Nirvana’s surprising mainstream breakthrough also kick-started the so-called grunge movement, bringing attention to groups like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.
No one, including Nirvana, expected “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to become such a seminal song. Cobain himself told Rolling Stone that it had “such a clichéd riff” (lots of people noted the similarity between said riff and that of “More Than a Feeling” by arena-rock group Boston). Also, the title of the song came from a joke. While Cobain and Bikini Kill front-woman Kathleen Hanna were hanging out in a motel room one night, Hanna wrote “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the wall (Cobain’s then-girlfriend, Tobi Vail, wore Teen Spirit deodorant). In the end, you could say the joke was on everybody!
